One of the most critical components determining the quality, performance, and safety of an electrical cable is its insulation material. Cable insulation prevents electrical current leakage, rules out short circuits, and shields the conductor from environmental hazards such as heat, moisture, chemicals, and mechanical stress.

As Aras Kablo, we have put together the most commonly used insulation materials in cable manufacturing and their distinct application areas.

1. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

PVC is the most widely adopted compounding material in the wire and cable industry.

  • Properties: It is highly cost-effective, versatile, flexible, and offers good mechanical protection. It possesses intrinsic resistance to chemicals and moisture.

  • Applications: Residential indoor wiring, low-voltage power cables, and signal/control lines.

2. XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene)

XLPE is the go-to insulation material for heavy-duty power distribution grids.

  • Properties: Thanks to its cross-linked molecular structure, it sustains much higher operating temperatures (90°C continuous, 250°C short-circuit). It features low dielectric losses and excellent water-treeing resistance.

  • Applications: Medium and high-voltage power cables, underground distribution networks, and submarine cables.

3. HFFR / LSZH (Halogen-Free Flame Retardant / Low Smoke Zero Halogen)

This compound has become a strict structural requirement in modern safety-first building codes.

  • Properties: In the event of a fire, these materials retard flame propagation and, crucially, do not emit toxic halogen gases. They also produce minimal, translucent smoke, keeping evacuation routes visible.

  • Applications: High-density public venues such as hospitals, schools, airports, subways, shopping malls, and data centers.

4. Rubber (EPR / EPDM)

Rubber compounds are reserved for specialized industrial environments that demand extreme durability.

  • Properties: They maintain superb structural flexibility even in freezing or sub-zero environments. They offer unparalleled resilience against abrasion, oils, ozone, and weathering.

  • Applications: Heavy industrial sites, mining operations, welding cables, wind turbines, and marine/shipboard environments.
